x-Augmented Reality

Step through, step out, and step into the world of soil – SOILx‘s augmented reality (AR) features allow you to connect soil facts to a real location on the ground! Find, touch, see, smell, and taste* the places where soil scientists have collected data for research and management. Make your own observations, add to the site information – explore!

SOILx supports an easy-to-use AR solution – allowing you to find and learn about soil sites through your smartphone’s GPS and camera! To access SOILx‘s AR world:

  1. Download the free Wikitude app for Android, iOS, Windows Phone or BlackBerry 10.

  2. Start the app on a GPS-enabled smartphone (allow GPS to use your current location).
  3. Touch the magnifying glass in the top right corner and type “SOILx” in the search field. You will then be able to find soil sites close to your current location through your smartphone’s camera.
  4. Click on the pop-up icon to read a short description for that site. If you want to learn more, click the link to the SOILx website!

It’s that easy! After that, just follow your phone. Wikitude lets you see SOILx‘s actual soil sites within 50 km of your current location. The three icons at the top of the Wikitude screen allow you to view the nearby sites as a list, on a map, or through the camera on your smartphone.

Whether you’re a teacher or a student, it literally opens your classroom to the world. It’s also a useful tool for land managers who work in the field and want to know more information about soils nearby.

*SOILx does not recommend all these actions.
